Shaving cream is a cosmetic that softens and lubricates your hair to help you shave more easily. When you apply shaving cream to your skin, it forms a foam that protects and moisturizes your skin while protecting it from the razor.

How to shave without shaving cream
- Use a fresh new razor instead of shaving cream if you don’t have any on hand. If you injure yourself shaving, a razor or blade cartridge that is still in the container is less likely to spread bacteria.
- Shave with the grain of your hair rather than pushing hard on dry skin with a razor (even though shaving against the grain is what gets you a slightly closer shave).
It’s a good idea to open the hair follicles with warm water or steam from a shower before shaving. - As you shave, use a washcloth to cover the area you’re shaving with warm water. Even better if you can get a steady spray of warm water from a showerhead.
- Don’t try to multitask. To avoid harm, focus on the task at hand.
- It’s not a good idea to shave your complete body when you’ve run out of shaving cream. Shave only the visible parts of hair or the hair you’re particularly concerned about.
- If you have to shave a sensitive area like your armpits, bikini line, or pubic area without shaving cream, know that you’re not going to achieve a very close shave. You’re also more likely to have razor bumps or ingrown hairs as a result. Make a decision based on this.
What to do after shaving
- Use aloe, shea butter, coconut oil, or your favourite lotion to create a moisture barrier for your skin.
- Use your favourite aftershave if you have any on hand.
- Apply a healing ointment like bacitracin or neomycin (Neosporin) to any nicks or cuts on your body and cover with a protective bandage.
