How To Make Mild Soap For Sensitive Skin

While I adore the concept of making my own soap, I’m also terrified of the process. To create soap from scratch, I believe a chemical process involving lye is required. Now, I don’t think it’s all that difficult, but anything that requires me to wear safety goggles and gloves isn’t my thing. Melt & pour soap is the easiest alternative for me.

What exactly is melt and pour soap? It’s basically pre-mixed soap that has been hardened into a block. You can use it as is, but it can also be melted down and additives added to form the soap mixture you want. We used substances that are nutritious and moisturizing in this circumstance.

If you have sensitive skin, search for products that contain:

  • butter from shea
  • milk from goats
  • butter of cacao

What You’ll Require

So, here’s what you’ll need to make this homemade bar soap:

  • Melt + Pour Soap: Look for the ingredients listed above – I use goat’s milk soap.
  • Oat flour (colloidal oatmeal) can be purchased pre-made or manufactured by blending rolled oats till fine.
  • Pink clay can aid with skin inflammation and irritation. Also beneficial for acne.
  • Raw honey is a natural exfoliant that is also antimicrobial, making it ideal for acne prevention.
  • Jojoba Oil (or olive oil): Jojoba oil is a wonderful moisturizer for sensitive skin. It’s moisturizing yet doesn’t clog pores because it’s non-comedogenic. If you don’t have jojoba oil, olive oil will suffice.

A soap mould makes the process significantly easier, but I misplaced mine during the move and a loaf pan will suffice. To keep it from sticking, line it with parchment paper.

 How to Make Bar Soap

I’m going to walk you through the process of making homemade bar soap if you’ve never done it before. It’s a lot easier than you think!

STEP 1: Gather all of your ingredients and weigh them. Make little cubes out of your melt and pour soap (the recipe calls for 1 lb which is half of a traditional 2 lb block).

STEP 2: Melt your soap in 30-second intervals in the microwave, stirring after each, OR build a double boiler on the stovetop. Your soap will melt in around 10 minutes if you use the double boiler method. It will cook much faster in the microwave, but be careful not to burn it.

STEP 3: Once the soap is completely melted, add all of the components (oats, clay, honey, and jojoba oil) to a large mixing bowl.

STEP 4: Pour your soap into the mould and, if desired, cover with rolled oats. Allow a few hours for the mixture to solidify (or place in the refrigerator for 1 hour if in a rush).

STEP 5: Cut your soap into the pieces you choose. A soap mould can normally produce 6-8 little pieces, whereas a loaf pan can produce 3-4 larger pieces. Indefinitely store your soap in a paper bag in a dark spot. They are not going to spoil.

For us, one bar of soap normally lasts months (for two people in the shower), thus this formula should last at least a year.
