Spring cleaning time is here, which for many means cleaning out the closet. Whoa, hold the trash can! Some of those outdated clothes might have the potential to be part of your favourite outfit! Check out these simple ways you can extend the life of your clothes and introduce some new apparel into your wardrobe.

How Can I Make My Old Clothes Look More Fashionable
EMBELLISH YOUR CARDIGANS
- To make the bottom part, I cut the fabric like I am making bias tape. I used 36″wide muslin. Make a large square, and fold it in half vertically. Cut 4 1/2″ strips.
- Piece them together. Fold the bottom less than 1/4″ twice and saw.
- Use your sewing machine’s biggest stitch setting to sew the top. To gather the fabric, pull the thread. I wanted my cardigan to have some flare, but I didn’t want a lot of ruffles. The cardigan’s bottom measured 30′′ all the way around, so I used bias that was 45′′ long and shrunk to 30′′.
- Around the entire bottom of the cardigan, pin the bias ruffle. I sewed it on using zigzag stitches. To finish it up, zigzag the ends together.
- Use the same method as steps 3 and 4 to add some wide lace over the cloth ruffle.
- The second row of lace ruffles was added to the rear in order to offer extra interest. I fashioned a ruffle and put it to the back of the 14 1/2′′ of lace that I had previously cut, folded, and zigzagged to prevent fraying.
- Cut a piece of 1 3/4″ x 6 1/2″ lace, and stitch it to the waist as well. To ensure that steps 6 and 7 line up properly, centre them.
- My sleeves measured 8 1/2′′ around. To prevent fraying, I zigzagged the ends of the 14-inch-long lace while I sewed the ends together. The bottom of the sleeve should have ruffles, which you should stitch on using the same method as steps 3 and 4. Similarly, treat the other sleeve.
RE-SIZE BAGGY SWEATERS
- Around the hem, secure the safety pins. This should be done on the sides and underneath the arm, where the pins won’t be seen very well. Even while this is only a short-term fix, it is ideal when you need to return the sweater to someone else.

- Include a cloth or faux fur collar: With an alternative collar that you sew over the current one, you can add texture or colour.
- Replace the buttons: A jacket’s appearance can be greatly improved with new buttons. To spruce up your clothes, add some that are vividly coloured or even glittery.
- Embroider the bottom or sleeves with trim: Pom poms can give your coat a whimsical touch or perhaps a lovely fringe.
- Put on a belt. Your silhouette will look nicely suited if you wear a belt. Choose a leather belt, or use a broad, stretchy belt to fit even the largest jackets.
- Your lapel should have a brooch or pin you made. This is a technique to add colour and bling to your jacket without making any changes to the original clothing.
- Cut a long coat shorter. If you want to update a long, worn-out coat, cut it short to hit or even reach waist level.
