Ways to prevent clothes from pilling – fashion

When a bunch of short or broken fibres tangle together in a tiny knot or ball, known as pilling, it appears on the cloth. During normal wear and use, the pills form due to rubbing or abrasion.

The pilling is seen in the areas of clothing or linens that experience the most abrasion in daily use, such as the centre of bed sheets,  underarmsaround the collar and cuffs of a   shirt, and between the thighs and on the back of jeans nevertheless, they can appear anywhere on fabric.

Ways to prevent clothes from pilling

  • Use the mild cycle in the washer for clothes that you think will pill. Your garments will be protected by reduced agitation and a shorter wash cycle. Alternatively, hand washing is a gentler option.
  • Turn any clothing inside out before washing it by hand or in a machine. This protects the fabric’s surface against abrasion caused by other clothing, zippers, and buttons.
  • Before you wash your clothes, make sure you sort them carefully. Washing sensitive things with jeans will create greater abrasion and damage to the fabric’s surface. Lint-producing materials, such as terry cloth, should not be washed with other garments. The lint from terry cloth will stick securely to the polyester surface if there are broken fibres on it.
  • Don’t fill the washer tub over its limit. Cramming it as full as possible prevents clothes from moving freely and damages the surface of the clothes.
  • Avoid using aggressive cleaners or bleach, which can weaken fibres and cause them to shatter and pill.
  • Choose a washing detergent that has the cellulase enzyme. Cotton pills will be broken down and removed with the help of the enzyme.
  • During the rinse cycle, add a commercial fabric softener. Fabric softener contains chemicals that coat the fibres of the fabric, reducing abrasion.
  • Avoid using the dryer. Dry woven fabrics and knitted clothes should be laid flat to dry. Remove fragile objects from the dryer as soon as possible to avoid abrasion from other textiles.
