Facebook has been around since 2004. Even though people are highly socially active on this social media platform, many are still curious about the dating side of Facebook. But should you create a separate profile for your love life? And how does this fit into your Facebook experience?
Before we get started, it’s important to note that Facebook is not specifically a dating site and doesn’t offer any type of match-making service or relationship counseling. If you’re looking for something more serious, take a look at our list of the best dating sites.
Now, onto the good stuff! Here’s what you need to know before diving into Facebook dating.
Facebook Dating is a New Feature
This is the part that confuses most people. Facebook doesn’t offer a dating service, and it’s not an app you can download. Instead, Facebook Dating is a new feature that connects users who are interested in each other.
When you set up your profile to date on Facebook, you’ll be able to include your sexual orientation, age range, and what kind of relationship you’re looking for. You’ll also get a chance to upload photos to help potential dates know more about you.
The Difference Between Facebook and Dating
First of all, Facebook is a social media platform that connects people in real life. Dating is a service that matches singles based on their preferences, such as religion and marital status.
Second, with Facebook, you can connect with family members, friends and colleagues and share information. With dating, you have the opportunity to find someone who shares your values or goals for the future.
Thirdly, there’s no need to create a new profile for dating purposes. You can use your existing profile and simply add an interest in dating or relationships so others know what you’re looking for.
Finally, if you don’t have time to maintain two profiles then it might be best to create one specifically for your love life needs. That way you can keep your other connections separate from any potential romantic endeavors.
How To Use Facebook Dating
In 2018, Facebook introduced a new dating service known as “Facebook Dating” in Canada, Colombia, Thailand, and Mexico. Users can sign up with their Facebook account and then search for potential matches based on their location and mutual friends.
Here’s how it works:
- If you’re interested in someone who’s also interested in you, you’ll be notified
- You can chat one-on-one with matches to get to know them better
- If you don’t hit it off with someone but wish to remain connected or reconnected, you’ll have the option of being “friends” with them on Facebook
What You Should Know Before You Start
If you’re looking for something casual, a dating site might be the way to go. Remember that Facebook is not a dating service, so create a separate profile if you’re looking for something long-term or serious.
Facebook profiles are public and identifiable, which can be good or bad depending on your intentions. It might be easier to keep things private if you create a Facebook account specifically for your love life.
No one knows how much Facebook tracks your activity in real life, but it’s always best to keep things as private as possible. Keep this in mind when creating your dating profile on Facebook!
For those who are interested in meeting people outside their current location, Facebook is a great place to start. You can use the search function and look at potential matches all over the world!
Setting up your profile
First, when you’re setting up your profile, don’t let your love life overtake the rest of your Facebook profile. A good rule of thumb is to keep your personal photos (with a few exceptions) to a minimum while maintaining an active timeline and posts that are suitable for dating purposes.
Do not promote yourself as “single” on Facebook or mention that you’re looking for someone in any way. Your friends and family will see this on their newsfeeds, which could lead to some awkward conversations or people trying to set you up with someone they know.
You also want to create a basic dating profile by adding pictures of yourself and filling out some basic information about yourself like age, location, education level, marital status, and sexual orientation.
This helps attract people who are looking for someone close by or interested in similar things as you so you can start off with a clean slate.
Reporting bullies and fake profiles
In the past, you would have to create separate profiles for dating and your personal profile. However, Facebook now offers you a choice. You can maintain a single persona on Facebook or have a separate dating profile. With this option, you can control your social media experience more easily.
If you choose to have a separate dating profile, it will only show up on the side panel when someone has liked your page and not appear in the main feed of friends’ posts.
This is an important feature because it makes it easier for someone who is using Facebook to find love while still maintaining their privacy. For example, if you are looking to date someone in your office or another professional environment, it’s best that they don’t know about your personal life outside of work.
Another advantage of having a separate dating profile is that it keeps away bullies or people trying to fake profiles from getting access to your personal data and photos.
The pros of using Facebook for dating
There are many advantages to using Facebook for dating. One advantage is that you don’t have to create a separate profile. You can use your current Facebook profile and simply add a new section called “dating.” This means all of the people you would normally interact with on Facebook can still see whatever you post, but you’ll be able to make more specific filters for your dating life.
Another benefit of using Facebook for dating is that you can use it as a way to meet people who are interested in the same things as you without having anything in common with them. It’s also convenient because it’s one place where you can communicate with people based on their gender, age, and location.
The cons of using Facebook for dating
What are the downsides to using Facebook for dating? Well, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows.
- You can’t control who can see your profile
Your Facebook profile is public by default, so everyone on the internet has access to it. This means that people you wouldn’t normally want to connect with will be able to find you on Facebook. For example, if your interests include artsy things like painting and pottery, a potential employer might see those interests in your profile and decide not to hire you.
- You have limited search capabilities
If you’re looking for someone specific on Facebook, you may have a difficult time finding them because they don’t have a public profile. In this case, your best bet is to use Facebook’s friend-finding features which can help you locate friends of friends and connect with them. However, these features don’t always work as expected (especially if there are privacy settings).
- Not all relationships are healthy
Dating through social media platforms often leads to false expectations and unhealthy relationships due to misrepresentations of oneself or their life. If you’re already having trouble meeting singles in real life, then online dating probably won’t fare any better for you. It’s important for people to go into dating knowing what they want from the experience because it could lead to disappointment down the line when expectations aren’t met.
How to avoid the pitfalls of Facebook dating
As with any other social media platform, there are a few pitfalls. The first one is that you’ll need to make sure your personal information is locked down on Facebook. If someone searches for you, they will be able to see any information you’ve shared publicly, which may not always be the best idea if you’re single and trying out Facebook dating.
Luckily, this can easily be avoided by setting up your account in a private way. Of course, this means that your friends won’t be able to see what you’re up to or take part in some of the new features.
Another problem with using Facebook as a dating site is the lack of anonymity. This can have both negative and positive effects on the user experience depending on their preferences. On the one hand, it’s easier for people who know each other to contact one another because they have common friends; but on the other hand, strangers may use Facebook for ill-intentions without fear of being discovered or blocked.
The last pitfall to avoid is that many people switch off from using Facebook when looking for romantic relationships because they are afraid their significant other will find out they were browsing on Facebook dating while they were together. So, before diving into Facebook dating make sure everything is set up and locked down correctly so it doesn’t interfere with your love life and vice versa!
How does Facebook Dating work?
Facebook is not a dating site. However, it offers a feature that lets you find out who is interested in you and then contact them. This feature is called Facebook Dating.
To start, you need to download the latest version of the Facebook app on your phone. Then, tap on the icon with three lines in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. From there, select “Dating.”
Next, click “Sign Up” and fill out your profile with information about yourself and what kind of person you’re looking for in a potential partner (name, age range). Once done, select “Find Matches.” You’ll be asked to set up a profile photo from one of your existing photos or take one from within the app. The photo can’t be live; it’s recommended to take this photo in advance so you don’t end up being caught off guard when someone asks for one on the app.
After that, select “Start Chatting” to start chatting with potential matches using Facebook chat. Just click anyone’s name and start chatting as if they were a friend or family member on Facebook!
Benefits and Drawbacks of Facebook Dating
One of the biggest benefits of Facebook dating is how easy it is to connect with other singles. With a plethora of single people on Facebook, you’ll never be short on potential matches. Another benefit of Facebook dating is that it’s free. Unless you’re paying for an upgraded membership, there are no hidden fees or charges when it comes to this social media platform.
A drawback to Facebook dating is the lack of privacy and security when it comes to your personal information. When you sign up for any type of social media account, be aware that you’re giving away your personal data. This includes your real name, location, phone number, email address, and so on. You may not realize this until someone else has access and they can easily access your information without any hassle.
Another downside is that some people feel pressured to find their “soulmate” within a certain time frame while they’re using Facebook as a dating service. As we all know, finding love takes time and putting pressure on yourself can have negative consequences on both your mind and body.
How To Start A Facebook Dating Profile
Creating a Facebook dating profile is not the same as creating a regular Facebook profile. Your dating profile will actually be part of your regular profile, and it won’t impact your other friends.
The Difference Between Facebook vs. Dating on Facebook
So, what’s the difference between Facebook and dating on Facebook? The two are different.
Facebook Dating is different from your normal Facebook profile in various ways. You access Dating from the same Facebook account, but it isn’t linked to your profile on other parts of the site.
Your current friends and anyone outside of Dating can’t see what you’re doing in here, which means any activity won’t show up on their News Feeds for example or messages between us will be separate chats with Messenger that don’t include our conversations together inside this app.
You can delete your dating profile without deleting all aspects of Facebook if you want-but remember: Deleting everything deletes both aspects so make sure either one is down before going further!
When people talk about “Facebook dating,” they are usually referring to the option to add your significant other as a friend on Facebook. This is not the same as the dating side of Facebook and is not a match-making service. If you want to keep your relationship private, this may be a good option for you.
The only other social media site that offers this type of privacy is Twitter, which has an encrypted DM feature that allows private messaging between two individuals who follow each other.

What to know before dating on Facebook
First, you need to know that Facebook dating is for connecting with other people and doesn’t actually match you up with anyone. You can use Facebook dating as a way to meet new people near you or find out what’s happening in your local community. This is a good way to get access to potential dates and interact with singles before going on a date.
Another thing to note is that if you’re looking for a long-term relationship, this might not be the best place for it. Facebook has no specific rules about who can contact others via their dating app, so there’s no way of guaranteeing that someone on the site is really single or looking.

Social Media Versus Dating
With Facebook, there’s a difference between social media and dating. When you log on to Facebook, you’re logged in with your full name, profile picture, and other personal information. This is all used for social networking purposes.
In the case of Facebook dating, you have the option to set up two separate profiles: one for your personal life (friends, family) and one for your dating life (strangers).
When it comes to what you should do with Facebook, it completely depends on what you want out of it. If you want to focus on expanding your social network and making new friends, then keep using Facebook as usual. For those interested in finding love through social media or meeting a stranger for meetups or even relationships, then creating a separate profile is necessary.
How to Approach a Date on Facebook
There are a few things to keep in mind before you start swiping away on Facebook. First, be clear about what you’re looking for. If you’re only interested in casual dates, it’s important not to misrepresent yourself or your intentions. You also need to be aware of the privacy settings on your account so that others don’t have access to your dating profile.

Once you have a clear idea of what you want and how to protect your information, it’s time to jump into the search bar! Facebook offers three main categories: “Single,” “Seeing someone” and “In a relationship.” Choose the category that best fits your current status. When typing in keywords for potential matches, try using broad terms like “coffee,” “music,” or “cats” rather than specific interests like “Paleo diet.”
This will increase your chances of finding matches who are open with similar interests. Once you find people who seem interesting, take some time reading their profiles before sending any messages (or friend requests). You can even filter by location and mutual friends if there’s an extra level of comfort that way.
What to Do After the Date?
One of the most common questions about Facebook dating is what to do after the date. Here’s how it works:
- You and your date agree to meet on a specific day
- You’ll share your profile name and picture with them
- The two of you can chat, like each other’s posts, and message one another as you would on any other Facebook platform.
Now, when it’s time for the date, you can either open up your laptop and log into Facebook, or if you’re a phone user, download the Facebook Dating app. Once you’ve both agreed to meet, you can start texting one another before or during the date. It’s pretty seamless — but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some ground rules.
Facebook dating singles you out
The best way to create a Facebook dating profile is as a separate entity from your personal account. If you just have one account with your name, it’s easy for all of your friends and family members to see that you’re on the hunt for love. And when we say “easy”, we mean that it’s been done before so there are no surprises. Your friends will know about it within seconds.
If you want to keep things discreet, creating a new account is the best option. However, if you do decide to create a new account, make sure to use a different email address so people can’t easily find it by looking up your name in Facebook search.
How to use facebook dating effectively
If you’re looking to use Facebook dating, the first thing you need to do is create a separate dating profile. This will ensure that potential dates don’t see your personal or professional life in their newsfeed. You can do this by selecting “Create a Dating Profile” on the app or mobile site.

Once you’ve created your profile, it’s time to start adding some people to your list of potential matches. To do this, search for people who are nearby and have similar interests as you. There are two ways you can add people to your list. One way is to find someone in the area and click “Add Friend.”
The other way is through the “Marketplace,” which allows you to browse through people who want to connect with others nearby.
When someone accepts your friend request, it’s time to get chatting! On Facebook Dating, there are no preset conversation topics like Tinder has. That means it’s up to you and your partner-in-crime (or pure love?) what type of conversations you want to have. Just make sure that anything you say stays appropriate!
If all goes well, then it’s time to meet in person! You’ll be able to choose when and where from the chat messages with your potential match (as long as they’ve also agreed).
Conclusion
Who hasn’t seen a post on Facebook that starts with, “I found my soulmate on Facebook!”
While it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of this new feature, it’s important to remember that there are a lot of potential pitfalls to watch out for.
Facebook dating can be a great way to meet new people and make connections, but it’s not for everyone.
Here are some tips for making the most of Facebook dating:
1. Be honest about what you are looking for.
2. Keep your distance from strangers.
3. Make your profile private.
4. Don’t use your real name or post any personal information.
5. Be smart about who you connect with and don’t be afraid to block those you don’t feel comfortable with.
6. Absolutely refrain from using Facebook while on the date.
7. Set up a date and don’t forget to follow up after the date is over!
