How to fold a presidential pocket square
- Begin by unfolding and flattening the pocket square.
- Fold it to fit in your pocket’s breadth. In most circumstances, a straight fold down the middle will suffice.
- Fold it up from the bottom to make a finished rectangle that is the same width as your pocket and half an inch longer.
- Tuck the pocket square’s bottom fold into your pocket and tuck it down to the base. Make any necessary adjustments to achieve a single smooth strip of exposed cloth across the top of the pocket.
- The square fold, also known as the presidential fold, is the most basic pocket square fold: crisp, clean, and elegant. It has the form of a single horizontal cloth band that runs parallel to the top of the breast.
- Use this pocket square fold when you want maximum formality and understated elegance.
How to make a pocket square with one point
- Begin by unfolding and flattening the pocket square.
- To make a triangle, fold it diagonally down the middle.
- Fold the doubled-over corner of the pocket square inward on one side at the triangle base, where the fold is.
- Fold the opposite corner as well. Each fold should be the same size, and the pocket square should be around the same width as your pocket. The pocket square should resemble an envelope, with three rectangular sides and a triangular point protruding from the top.
- Tuck the bottom flap all the way down into your pocket, hiding the rectangular edges. The triangle pointing straight up should be the sole visible element of the pocket square.
- The one-point fold pocket square is simple enough to be suited for business
How to fold a pocket square with two-point
- Begin with the pocket square fully unfolded and flat.
- Fold it diagonally. Angle the fold very slightly off-centre so that one corner lies just to the left of the other.
- At the triangle base, where the fold is, fold one of the doubled-over corners of the pocket square inward.
- Fold the other corner. Make each fold the same size and the pocket square roughly the width of your pocket.
- Tuck the flat bottom of the fold into your pocket and snug it all the way down until the vertical edges of the pocket square are completely hidden. The only thing visible should be the two slightly offset triangular points, spaced as close or wide as desired.
Cagney pocket square
- Begin by unfolding and flattening the pocket square.
- Fold the pocket square diagonally and a little off-centre, so that one corner is directly across from the other.
- Fold the bottom left corner diagonally up and across the fold, ending with the corner point to the right of the top two corners.
- To construct a point to the left of the others, fold the bottom right corner in the same way. Make all four points of the pocket square roughly the same size and evenly spaced.
- Fold the outside corners inward, tucking them underneath the four points if the folded pocket square is larger than your pocket.
- Tuck the long part of the pocket square into the pocket and tuck it in until only the tip of the pocket square is visible.
