How to care for the tongue piercing infection
Keeping the mouth clean
You must do more than just clean the piercing site when it comes to tongue piercings. It’s also important to keep the rest of your mouth clean.
This can help prevent bacteria in your mouth from travelling to your piercing and becoming trapped within.
Watch what you eat
In this case, you don’t need that will bother your ring in your tongue so you should for food that is soft and not hard or crunchy.
Antibiotics and lotions purchased over the counter should be avoided
Antibiotics sold over the counter have long been used to treat infections. However, these aren’t suitable for piercings and can even be harmful.
Topical creams and ointments can trap bacteria inside the piercing, causing it to get infected. Furthermore, they aren’t meant to be used in your mouth.
Hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, and other antibacterial substances in oral cleansers can destroy healthy skin cells and impede the healing process.
It’s best if you keep to your cleansing and compressing practice. If you don’t notice any improvement after a day or two, see your piercer.
Playing with or removing the jewellery is not a good idea
Swelling and discomfort can be exacerbated by moving the jewellery about, and new bacteria can be introduced into the holes.
You should only touch it when you’re cleansing it.
It may also be tempting to remove the jewellery, but this can have the opposite effect.
Remove the jewellery to avoid further irritation and to allow a newer piercing to close. This can trap bacteria and propagate an infection beyond the piercing site.
Two to three times every day, clean the area
The best strategy to drain out bacteria and prevent future irritation is to cleanse on a regular basis. Cleanings in the morning and at night are best. You could also rinse your mouth with a saline solution after each meal.
